Jungle Operations Training Center (JOTC) / Ft. Sherman, Panama

While a 19th century Fort Sherman existed for a time (1878-1900) in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, the 20th century Fort Sherman was established in 1912 on Toro Point at the Caribbean end of the Panama Canal. Fort Sherman was the primary defensive base for the Caribbean sector of the Panama Canal.

Since most of the forts 23,100 acres was covered by jungle, in 1951 it became home to the Jungle Operations Training Center (JOTC). Each year, around 9,000 US and allied Central American forces came to JOTC to be trained in jungle warfare, Air Crew Survival, and Engineer Jungle Warfare.

Fort Sherman and its Pacific-side partner, Fort Amador, were decommissioned and turned over to Panama in 1999. The JOTC also closed in 1999 but was revived at Schofield Barracks, HI in 2013 and continues there today.
