Operation Gothic Serpent / TF-Ranger

The U.S. Mission in Somalia

The United States entered Somalia in 1992 to help stop a famine in a country devastated by civil war and the collapse of its central government. Armed factions controlled roads, ports, and food distribution, making it dangerous for relief organizations to reach people who needed help. The initial American objective was to get humanitarian aid delivered and create enough security for that work to continue.

Operation Provide Relief began with an airlift of supplies from Kenya. In December 1992, Operation Restore Hope brought a U.S.-led multinational force, UNITAF, into Somalia to secure relief routes and facilities. Marines, Army units including the 10th Mountain Division, and supporting air and naval forces took part. Special Forces, Civil Affairs, and Psychological Operations personnel also worked with coalition troops, relief organizations, and local communities.

On May 4, 1993, responsibility passed from UNITAF to UNOSOM II. Its mandate went beyond protecting food deliveries to include disarmament, reconciliation, and restoring public institutions. The remaining American force provided logistics, aviation, and a quick reaction force under Operation Continue Hope. The humanitarian emergency had eased, but Somalia's political conflict remained unresolved.

Operation Gothic Serpent and Task Force Ranger

On June 5, 1993, forces associated with Mohamed Farrah Aidid's Somali National Alliance killed 24 Pakistani peacekeepers. The UN authorized action against those responsible, and the confrontation with Aidid intensified. Further attacks on American and coalition personnel contributed to the decision to send a dedicated special operations force to Mogadishu in August.

Operation Gothic Serpent was the campaign to capture Aidid and key members of his organization. Task Force Ranger, commanded by MG William Garrison, was the joint force assigned that mission. It operated through an American chain of command reporting to U.S. Central Command, separately from the main U.S. force supporting UNOSOM II. Coordination and liaison between those forces were therefore essential.

TF-Ranger's principal combat elements included:

Bco 3/75 Rangers, with battalion leadership and supporting personnel, providing security, blocking positions, and ground convoy capabilities.

C Squadron, 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, conducting the assault and capture missions.

1st Battalion, 160th SOAR, flying MH-60 Black Hawks and MH-6/AH-6 Little Birds for insertion, extraction, armed support, and rescue.

Navy SEALs from the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, contributing special operations personnel.

24th Special Tactics Squadron pararescuemen and combat controllers, providing rescue, medical, and air-ground coordination capabilities.

The task force conducted six raids before October 3. It captured members of Aidid's organization, including financial adviser Osman Atto on September 21, but Aidid remained at large. Intelligence limitations complicated the search, while Somali fighters became increasingly willing to engage American forces. A separate American Black Hawk was shot down on September 25, demonstrating the threat RPGs posed to helicopters over the city.

The Battle of Mogadishu, October 3–4, 1993

On October 3, TF-Ranger launched its seventh raid against a meeting of Aidid's senior associates near the Olympic Hotel and Bakara Market. Approximately 160 personnel, supported by 19 aircraft and a 12-vehicle ground convoy, went into the city. Delta operators would capture the targets, Rangers would secure the surrounding intersections, and the convoy would carry the force and its prisoners back to the airfield.

The assault captured the intended leaders and other detainees. But a Ranger's serious injury during insertion required an early evacuation, and armed resistance rapidly increased. At roughly 4:20 p.m., an RPG brought down Super 61. Rangers and a combat search and rescue team moved to secure the wreckage, while a Little Bird evacuated wounded personnel. The aircraft delivering the rescue team was itself hit but managed to get away.

About 20 minutes later, Super 64, flown by CW3 Michael Durant, was shot down at a second location. Two separate crash sites now required protection and recovery. The operation had expanded from a short capture mission into a fight to reach downed crews, care for casualties, and extract scattered forces through streets filling with fighters and barricades.

At Super 64, MSG Gary Gordon and SFC Randall Shughart repeatedly volunteered to be inserted when ground forces could not immediately reach the crew. They moved the wounded men from the aircraft and defended them until both snipers were killed. Durant survived and was taken prisoner. Gordon and Shughart received the Medal of Honor posthumously for their actions.

Around Super 61, American personnel established defensive positions in nearby buildings and fought through the night. Medics and pararescuemen treated casualties under fire, while helicopter crews provided close support and delivered supplies. The original convoy could not reach the site and returned to the airfield with prisoners and casualties. Initial relief attempts also encountered resistance that prevented a breakthrough.

The Relief Force and the Mogadishu Mile

The eventual relief effort drew on forces outside TF-Ranger. Task Force 2/14 Infantry, 10th Mountain Division, led by LTC William David, formed the American infantry core. Its attached personnel included 3rd Platoon, Cco 1/87 Infantry, whose participation has often received less attention than that of the Rangers and Delta operators.

Malaysian armored personnel carriers and Pakistani tanks joined the relief force, along with additional Rangers and aviation support. The multinational column had to assemble, coordinate, and fight its way through the city. The 10th Mountain Division's supporting aviation task force, TF Raven, also contributed to the effort. These conventional and coalition forces were central to getting the trapped Americans out.

The relief force linked up with the defenders at the first crash site at approximately 1:55 a.m. on October 4. Recovery work continued until near dawn. Wounded personnel were loaded into vehicles, while some Soldiers moved out on foot under fire before reaching transport. That movement became known as the Mogadishu Mile. It was one part of a larger evacuation, with Americans and their coalition partners still fighting to recover personnel and reach safety.

Aftermath

Eighteen Americans were killed in the October 3–4 battle, including two Soldiers from the relief force. Many more were wounded, and coalition troops also suffered casualties. Somali losses included both combatants and civilians; estimates differ substantially, and a precise total cannot be stated with confidence.

SFC Matthew Rierson, who had fought with TF-Ranger during the battle, was killed in a mortar attack on October 6. His death is important to the operation's history but should be distinguished from the 18 American deaths associated with October 3–4. Durant was released on October 14.

The raid had captured its intended detainees, and the relief force recovered the Americans trapped at the first crash site. Gothic Serpent nevertheless ended without capturing Aidid. After the battle, Washington halted offensive action against him and reinforced the American presence to protect the force and support withdrawal. TF-Ranger departed in October, and the main U.S. deployment ended in March 1994. American forces returned in 1995 for Operation United Shield to help evacuate the remaining UN mission.

Lessons Learned

Mogadishu remains a case study in how quickly a limited mission can become a sustained urban battle. As attacks on United Nations personnel escalated in 1993, the United States deployed Task Force Ranger to Mogadishu. Operation Gothic Serpent sought to capture Mohamed Farrah Aidid and key members of his Somali National Alliance. The task force brought together joint special operations personnel, including 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment–Delta, Rangers from 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, and the aviators and crews of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne).

Through August and September, Task Force Ranger conducted a series of raids against Aidid’s organization. On October 3, a mission to seize senior lieutenants near the Olympic Hotel became a prolonged urban battle after Somali forces shot down two MH-60 Black Hawks. The assault force’s focus shifted from capturing its targets to securing the crash sites, treating casualties, and recovering isolated personnel.

Rangers, special operators, aircrews, and support personnel fought through the night of October 3–4 under intense fire.

At the second crash site, Master Sergeant Gary Gordon and Sergeant First Class Randy Shughart volunteered to protect the downed crew despite knowing that immediate ground reinforcement was unavailable. Both were killed defending the position and were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Pilot Michael Durant survived the crash, was captured, and was released on October 14 after eleven days in captivity.

The rescue was a combined effort. Soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division, including elements of 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry and 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry, formed part of the quick-reaction and relief force. Supported by Malaysian armored personnel carriers and Pakistani tanks, the relief column reached the first crash site and helped evacuate the wounded and surviving troops. Their role was distinct from Task Force Ranger’s initial assault, but essential to bringing the force out.

The October raid captured its intended high-value targets, but the wider operation did not capture Aidid. The battle’s heavy losses influenced the subsequent withdrawal of U.S. forces. This hoodie commemorates the courage, sacrifice, and commitment to one another shown by the assault force, aviation crews, rescuers, and their coalition partners.

Historical references: U.S. Army Special Operations History Office; U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence; Airborne & Special Operations Museum.

Champion® Powerblend Hoodie

9.0 oz., 50% cotton / 50% polyester

Two-ply hood with dyed-to-match drawcord

Heavy rib-knit waistband and cuffs

Front pouch pocket

Set-in sleeves

Embroidered Champion “C” logo at left cuff

Black: S–3XL

Please check the Sizing & Measurements guide before ordering.
