The 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, is widely known as the Panther Brigade. It also carries the Army-approved special designation “Golden Brigade.” Both names belong in its story, but an official special designation and everyday unit usage are not interchangeable labels.
Operational Heritage
Army accounts describe the brigade's service in Vietnam and Grenada, as well as its response to Hurricane Katrina. Those missions involved different responsibilities and methods of deployment. Grenada, in particular, was an airlanded campaign for the 82nd rather than a division parachute assault.
The brigade's history also draws on the service of the infantry and supporting battalions assigned to it in each period. A reference to the 505th or 508th Regiment is not a substitute for identifying the participating battalion.
Afghanistan and Readiness
A 2012 Army report documents 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment returning from a nine-month Afghanistan mission supporting special operations forces. It also describes preparations by 2-505 and supporting Soldiers for another deployment.
At home station, the brigade continued joint training for airborne entry and follow-on ground operations. This cycle of deployments, recovery, and collective training is an important part of Panther service beyond any single battle.
Swift Response
During Swift Response 2018, brigade elements flew from Fort Bragg to the Baltic region and conducted parachute operations with allies and partners. Army coverage identifies 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry, and 307th Engineer Battalion personnel participating in the Lithuania portion of the exercise.
These are dated examples of the brigade's composition, not an unchanging current roster. AAC's collection honors Panther and Golden Brigade veterans while keeping the history of 3rd Brigade distinct from the division's other brigades.
