      Origins and Lineage

The U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) traces its roots to the post-Vietnam reorganization of U.S. Army Special Forces. In 1989, in response to evolving global threats and mission complexity, USASOC was officially activated as the major command responsible for all Army special operations forces. Its creation unified disparate units under one roof, providing centralized oversight for training, readiness, doctrine, and deployment of Army Special Operations.

      Mission and Role

USASOC serves as the command and control headquarters for a wide array of elite units:

      • Army Special Forces (Green Berets) – unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, direct action

      • 75th Ranger Regiment – airborne light infantry raids, rapid deployment

      • Civil Affairs & Psychological Operations (CA/PSYOP) – influence, stability, information operations

      • Special Mission Units – high-risk counterterrorism and hostage recovery

      • Support organizations – aviation, logistics, medical, training institutions

Through USASOC, the U.S. Army organizes, trains, equips, and deploys its special operations forces worldwide, ready to execute high-stakes missions such as unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, counterterrorism, and global response.

      Campaigns and Operational Highlights

USASOC units have participated in every major U.S. Special Operations campaign since its activation—from Panama (Operation Just Cause) and the Gulf War to Kosovo, Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom), Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom), and global counter-terrorism operations. Its comprehensive mission set has extended from conventional battlefields into asymmetric spaces like cyber, information, and hybrid warfare.

      Contemporary Significance

Today, USASOC stands at the forefront of global U.S. Army special operations. From its home at Fort Bragg, it provides strategic force projection, oversight of specialized training and readiness, and seamless integration of special operations into joint, interagency, and multinational frameworks. Its structure ensures that the Army’s most capable units are ready for rapid deployment across the full spectrum of operations—from high-intensity conflict to sensitive clandestine missions.
