The 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) was activated in 1961 as part of the Army’s expansion of Special Forces during the Cold War. Based primarily in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida, the 20th SFG(A) became one of two National Guard Special Forces groups (the other being the 19th SFG). Its Soldiers quickly gained proficiency in unconventional warfare, direct action, and foreign internal defense.
During the Vietnam War, members of the 20th deployed both individually and as teams to augment active-duty Special Forces. They supported indigenous units, trained local forces, and conducted counterinsurgency missions. Today, the 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) remains headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, with battalions spread across southern states. As part of U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC), it provides regionally aligned expertise while remaining globally deployable. Its Soldiers undergo the same demanding Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) and Qualification Course as their active-duty counterparts.
