The 6th Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne)

The 6th Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne) is a premier active-duty tactical influence unit subordinate to the historic 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne). Headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the 6th POB(A) stands at the tip of the spear for the United States Army’s information warfare capabilities. The battalion is regionally aligned to support the United States European Command (USEUCOM), commanding the narrative battlespace across one of the most complex, diverse, and heavily contested strategic environments on the globe.

The unit's origins trace back to the height of the Vietnam War. Activated in October 1965, the battalion was rapidly deployed to Southeast Asia to execute highly dangerous, close-quarters psychological warfare. Throughout the conflict, the 6th POB(A) conducted massive leaflet dissemination campaigns, aerial broadcasts, and tactical loudspeaker operations designed to induce mass defections from the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army. Their relentless efforts during this era earned the unit numerous campaign streamers and solidified their reputation as masters of battlefield influence.

In the decades that followed, the 6th POB(A) adapted to a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape. During the 1990s, the battalion played a pivotal role in the Balkans, deploying tactical teams to support peacekeeping operations in Bosnia and Kosovo, where their culturally tuned messaging was critical in de-escalating ethnic violence. Throughout the Global War on Terror, elements of the 6th POB(A) were heavily engaged in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Operating autonomously alongside Special Forces detachments and conventional infantry, they effectively degraded insurgent morale and separated hostile networks from their civilian support bases.

Today, the 6th Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne) operates at the absolute forefront of Great Power Competition. Faced with sophisticated near-peer adversaries, the battalion’s highly trained operators utilize cutting-edge digital media, linguistic fluency, and regional expertise to counter adversarial disinformation and bolster NATO alliances across Europe. Whether deterring aggression in Eastern Europe or training allied forces in the art of influence, the Soldiers of the 6th POB(A) ensure that the United States maintains cognitive dominance and achieves strategic victory long before the first shot is fired.
