Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003–2011) marked the U.S.-led coalition’s invasion of Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein and eliminate weapons of mass destruction. It featured one of the largest armored thrusts in history, combined with airborne and special operations forces securing key objectives. Airborne Apparel Company is proud to offer reproductions and unique designs that celebrate the legacy of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) began on March 20, 2003, when U.S. and coalition forces launched air strikes and ground operations against Iraq. The primary objectives were to remove Saddam Hussein from power, destroy alleged WMD capabilities, and establish a free, democratic Iraq. Within three weeks, coalition forces seized Baghdad, and by May 1, 2003, major combat operations were declared complete. However, the campaign evolved into a prolonged counterinsurgency and stability mission that lasted until the official end of OIF in December 2011.
Airborne & Special Operations Role
Airborne and special operations forces played a decisive role in the early phases:
-
The 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team conducted the combat parachute assault onto Bashur Airfield in northern Iraq on March 26, 2003. This jump — the first large-scale combat airborne operation since Panama in 1989 — opened a northern front, linking up with Kurdish Peshmerga forces.
-
The 82nd Airborne Division deployed to secure key facilities, supply routes, and later rotated multiple Brigade Combat Teams throughout the war.
-
The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) spearheaded deep helicopter-borne assaults, most famously the “Thunder Runs” into Baghdad.
-
Special operations units, including U.S. Army Special Forces Groups, Rangers, Delta Force, and Navy SEALs, conducted targeted raids, captured high-value individuals, and worked with Iraqi and Kurdish allies.
Later Operations
As the war shifted into counterinsurgency, airborne units repeatedly deployed to Iraq, engaging in major operations such as:
-
Operation Phantom Fury (Fallujah, 2004)
-
Operation Together Forward (Baghdad security, 2006)
-
The 2007–2008 Surge, where additional brigades, including elements of the 82nd and 101st, were sent to stabilize the country.
Legacy
Operation Iraqi Freedom reshaped modern U.S. military doctrine, highlighting the challenges of counterinsurgency, urban warfare, and nation-building. It remains one of the most complex campaigns of the 21st century, remembered for its rapid invasion, difficult occupation, and the sacrifices of countless Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines.
