The 122nd Aviation Support Battalion (ASB) is the logistical backbone of the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, providing aviation maintenance, supply, signal support and rapid deployment readiness to enable air assault operations worldwide. Based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the 122nd ASB has supported combat operations from Iraq and Afghanistan to global contingency missions. Airborne Apparel Company is proud to offer reproductions and unique designs that celebrate the legacy of the 122nd Aviation Support Battalion.

The 122nd Aviation Support Battalion was formally established in 2006 when the Army reorganized the 82nd Airborne Division into the Modular Force structure. Aviation support companies were consolidated and re-flagged under the new battalion, which became part of the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB). From the beginning, its mission has been to ensure that the “wings of the airborne” remain supplied, maintained, and ready for combat anywhere in the world.

      Mission & Role

The 122nd ASB provides the logistics and sustainment lifeline for the 82nd CAB. Its responsibilities include:

      • Aviation maintenance for UH-60 Black Hawk and CH-47 Chinook helicopters.

      • Distribution of parts, fuel, and ammunition to aviation units.

      • Signal and communications support for airborne aviation missions.

      • Logistical planning and sustainment for rapid-deployment operations.

The battalion is designed to deploy within 18 hours of alert, supporting the 82nd Airborne Division’s global crisis-response mission.

      Combat & Deployment History

Shortly after its activation, the 122nd ASB deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and later to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom. Its Soldiers provided the behind-the-scenes support that kept helicopters flying in austere environments—everything from fixing battle-damaged aircraft to ensuring fuel and ammunition reached the flight line. In both theaters, the battalion enabled continuous air assault, medical evacuation, and reconnaissance operations.

      Identity & Legacy

      • Parent Unit: 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division.

      • Mission: Sustain the “Wings of the Airborne” by ensuring aviation readiness.

      • Culture: The battalion embodies the airborne ethos of rapid deployment and adaptability, ensuring aircraft remain operational in some of the most difficult conditions on earth.

      • Legacy: Its record of combat support in Iraq, Afghanistan, and global contingency missions has made it an indispensable part of airborne aviation history.

      Why It Matters

Airborne and air assault operations depend on aircraft being ready at all times. The 122nd Aviation Support Battalion makes that possible. Without its aviation maintenance and logistical expertise, the 82nd’s helicopters could not deliver paratroopers, provide close support, or evacuate wounded Soldiers. The battalion may operate behind the scenes, but its work is central to the airborne mission.
