The 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), the first U.S. Army Special Forces unit, was activated in 1952 and has operated from Europe to the Middle East for over 70 years. Today, the group is headquartered at Fort Carson, Colorado, with a forward element stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, keeping its long-standing European mission alive. Known as the “Quiet Professionals,” 10th SFG(A) pioneered unconventional warfare during the Cold War and remains central to modern Green Beret operations worldwide. The 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) was activated on 19 June 1952 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, under Colonel Aaron Bank, often referred to as the “father of Special Forces.” As the first official Special Forces Group, 10th SFG(A) was designed to carry out unconventional warfare in the event of a Soviet invasion, organizing resistance movements and conducting sabotage deep behind enemy lines.
Soon after activation, a significant portion of the group deployed to Bad Tölz, West Germany, becoming the forward special operations element of NATO. This forward presence symbolized America’s commitment to Europe during the Cold War and established the 10th as the Army’s European-focused Green Beret unit.
Cold War to Post-Cold War Missions
Throughout the Cold War, 10th SFG(A) Soldiers trained NATO partners and resistance forces across Europe, from the Alps to Scandinavia. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the group’s mission expanded, with deployments to the Balkans, the Middle East, and Africa. The 10th became known for building allied capacity while maintaining its unconventional warfare roots.
Global War on Terror
After 9/11, 10th SFG(A) deployed quickly to Afghanistan, where Green Berets linked up with the Northern Alliance to oust the Taliban in late 2001. The group later conducted extensive operations in Iraq, spearheading unconventional campaigns, training Iraqi units, and conducting direct-action missions. Since then, the 10th has been engaged across the globe, from counterterrorism in Africa to reassurance missions in Europe.
