Operation Just Cause (1989โ€“1990) was the U.S. invasion of Panama to depose dictator Manuel Noriega, protect American citizens, and secure the Panama Canal. Airborne units, including the 82nd Airborne Division and 75th Ranger Regiment, executed large-scale combat parachute jumps, making it the most significant airborne assault since World War II. Airborne Apparel Company is proud to offer reproductions and unique designs that celebrate the legacy of Operation Just Cause.

Operation Just Cause began on December 20, 1989, when nearly 27,000 U.S. troops, joined by about 300 aircraft, launched coordinated strikes across Panama. The operation sought to remove General Manuel Noriega from power, safeguard U.S. citizens living in Panama, defend the integrity of the Panama Canal Treaties, and restore democratic governance.

      Airborne Operations

A defining feature of the campaign was the scale and coordination of its airborne assaults:

      • The 75th Ranger Regiment conducted a nighttime parachute assault on Rio Hato Airfield, neutralizing Panamanian Defense Forces and securing the base.

      • The 82nd Airborne Division executed combat jumps onto Torrijos/Tocumen International Airport, securing the vital hub for follow-on forces.

      • These operations marked the largest U.S. combat parachute drops since World War II, demonstrating the continued strategic importance of airborne forces in modern warfare.

      Ground & Special Operations

In addition to airborne units, the 7th Infantry Division (Light), 193rd Infantry Brigade, U.S. Marines, Special Forces, and Navy SEALs all took part. Notably, SEAL teams were tasked with disabling Noriegaโ€™s aircraft at Paitilla Airfield and securing key installations along the canal.

      Aftermath & Legacy

Within days, most Panamanian forces were neutralized, and Noriega was eventually captured in early January 1990 after taking refuge in the Vatican embassy. The operation highlighted U.S. joint operations capabilities and the ability of airborne units to seize and hold critical terrain under combat conditions.

Operation Just Cause is remembered not only as a swift and decisive victory but also as a demonstration that airborne forces remained a powerful tool for rapid deployment and regime change decades after their World War II origins.
