      Special Operations Command Africa (SOCAFRICA) is a joint special operations headquarters, not an Army-only command. It brings together capabilities from multiple services in support of U.S. Africa Command and works with African and other partner forces.

      Formation

      An AFRICOM command account dates SOCAFRICA's establishment to October 1, 2008. The command developed as the United States organized its Africa-focused military responsibilities under a dedicated geographic combatant command.

      In May 2009, it assumed responsibility for Joint Special Operations Task Force–Trans Sahara. That was a particular command relationship within the expanding organization, not evidence that every American force operating in Africa belonged to SOCAFRICA.

      Command Relationships

      The command's official description identifies it as a subordinate unified command of U.S. Special Operations Command, under the operational control of U.S. Africa Command. Its headquarters is at Kelley Barracks, Stuttgart, Germany.

      The published mission includes special operations planning, security cooperation, and development of partner capabilities. These activities involve Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine personnel with different specialties. SOCAFRICA should not be confused with a Special Forces group or with the separate Combined Joint Task Force–Horn of Africa.

      Training with Partners

      Flintlock 2025 provides a documented example of the command's multinational training work. Official reporting describes special operations forces training in Côte d'Ivoire with African and international partners.

      Exercises are part of a wider history of relationships and preparation; they do not establish a permanent footprint in every participating country. AAC's collection recognizes the joint-service community associated with SOCAFRICA while keeping specific deployments and subordinate organizations tied to their documented periods.
