The Regimental Military Intelligence Battalion (RMIB), 75th Ranger Regiment, brings intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, cyber, and electronic warfare capabilities into the Ranger formation. Its history combines a modern battalion established during the Regiment’s sustained combat deployments with an inherited lineage reaching back to World War II and Vietnam.

      Formation and Permanent Activation

The RMIB was provisionally activated at Fort Benning, Georgia, on May 22, 2017. Its formal lineage records a redesignation as the Military Intelligence Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, on June 11, 2018. Permanent activation followed on June 16, 2020. These dates mark separate steps in the battalion’s development: its initial organization, its formal designation, and its establishment as an enduring part of the Regiment.

World War II and Vietnam Lineage

The battalion’s lineage begins with an element of the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), Merrill’s Marauders, organized in the China-Burma-India Theater on October 3, 1943. That element subsequently became part of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 475th Infantry, and later carried the designation of the 75th Infantry.

In 1969, this branch became Company P, 75th Infantry, serving in Vietnam from February 1, 1969, until its inactivation on August 31, 1971. A second branch traces to Company B, 2d Ranger Battalion, activated in 1943, connecting the RMIB’s inherited record to the World War II Rangers and the Normandy campaign. The two branches were consolidated in 1986. These predecessor units account for the battalion’s earlier campaign history; the modern intelligence battalion began organizing in 2017.

      Intelligence and Technical Operations

The RMIB’s mission centers on developing and employing specialized Rangers who improve the regimental commander’s understanding of the operational environment. Its work combines intelligence collection and analysis with technical capabilities that support planning and deployed operations.

The Army’s 2020 activation announcement described a headquarters detachment, a Military Intelligence Company, and a Cyber Electromagnetic Activities Company. The intelligence company brought together all-source and geospatial analysis, human intelligence, counterintelligence, and unmanned aircraft capabilities. The cyber company integrated cyber operations, electronic warfare, signals intelligence, and technical surveillance. Together, these capabilities supported the Regiment’s intelligence requirements and coordination with other special operations and conventional forces.

Service During the Regiment’s Combat Deployments

The RMIB formed while the 75th Ranger Regiment remained committed to overseas combat operations. In February 2020, regimental public affairs identified RMIB personnel among the Rangers contributing to the deployed force alongside the maneuver battalions, regimental staff, and Regimental Special Troops Battalion.

The Regiment’s wider operational history includes Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. The RMIB’s place within that history belongs to the later period of those commitments, following its provisional activation. Its contribution is best understood through its specialized mission and documented participation in the deployed formation, rather than by assigning it every operation conducted by the Regiment since 2001.

      Ranger Standards

Service in military intelligence carries the same regimental expectations as other specialties. Soldiers entering the 75th Ranger Regiment must complete the appropriate Ranger Assessment and Selection Program and meet the Regiment’s physical, tactical, professional, and disciplinary standards. Technical expertise is part of that responsibility, alongside the obligations expressed in the Ranger Creed.

Our Military Intelligence Battalion collection honors the Rangers who have served in this formation, its veterans, and their families. It recognizes their place in the 75th Ranger Regiment and the intelligence work that supports its operations.
