JRTC: Preparing Light Forces for Combat

The Joint Readiness Training Center began operations in 1987, with its headquarters at Little Rock Air Force Base and training conducted at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. Created to give light forces demanding, realistic combat training, JRTC brought together infantry, aviation, supporting arms, and joint capabilities in exercises that challenged units to operate against a capable opposing force on unfamiliar terrain.

In 1993, JRTC moved to its permanent home at Fort Polk, Louisiana. The center celebrated its official opening there on August 20, followed by an 82nd Airborne Division training rotation in September. Over the following decades, JRTC expanded its urban training facilities and adapted its exercises to prepare formations for contingency operations, peacekeeping missions, and deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq.

Operations Group: Turning Experience into Readiness

The Operations Group organizes and guides the training that makes a JRTC rotation possible. Its specialized teams bring together expertise in maneuver, aviation, intelligence, fires, sustainment, communications, and special operations. Working alongside the professional opposing force, these teams create the conditions that test a unit’s planning, coordination, and ability to adapt under pressure.

Observer, Coach/Trainers are central to that process. They follow units through the exercise, observe decisions and actions, and help Soldiers and leaders examine their performance through after-action reviews. Their work turns the demands of a rotation into practical lessons that formations can carry into future operations.

Aviation at JRTC: Part of the Mission from the Beginning

Aviation was integral to JRTC’s first rotation in October 1987. That exercise included an airborne infantry battalion task force built around elements of the 3rd Battalion, 504th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, together with an aviation task force and other combined-arms assets. From the outset, JRTC recognized that light forces depended on close coordination between Soldiers on the ground and the aircraft supporting their operations.

Within Operations Group, the rotary-wing aviation training element has been identified as Task Force Alpha, with responsibility for training attack, airlift, and medical evacuation skills. The Aviation Division’s mission centers on observing, coaching, and training Army aviation battalion task forces to operate as essential members of a combined-arms team.

As the Army’s operational demands have changed, aviation training at JRTC has continued to emphasize the connection between air and ground operations. Experience from counterinsurgency campaigns has informed training that also tests aviation leaders’ ability to plan, synchronize, and command their formations in more complex combat scenarios. That continuing mission places the Aviation Task Force at the intersection of aviation expertise, realistic training, and readiness for the next operation.
