      The 7th Psychological Operations Group

The 7th Psychological Operations Group stands as a critical and formidable component of the United States Army Reserve, operating from its headquarters at Moffett Federal Airfield in California. As one of only two reserve psychological operations groups, the 7th POG is uniquely postured to rapidly project tactical influence elements across the globe, with a heavy emphasis on supporting the U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) area of responsibility. Comprised of highly specialized citizen-soldiers, the group leverages a unique blend of civilian sector expertise and elite military training to analyze foreign audiences, craft compelling messaging, and dominate the narrative battlespace.

The unit's origins trace back to the height of the Cold War and the complex escalation of the Vietnam War. Activated in October 1965 on the island of Okinawa, Japan, the 7th Psychological Operations Group was purposefully established to manage and expand vital influence operations throughout the Pacific theater. Operating massive regional broadcast facilities and producing millions of leaflets, the group played an instrumental role in countering Communist propaganda and shaping regional dynamics across Southeast Asia, establishing a foundational legacy of psychological warfare that continues to define the unit today.

Throughout the Global War on Terror, the 7th POG cemented its modern reputation as an indispensable force multiplier. Elements of the group deployed extensively to the Middle East and Central Asia in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Operating in small, autonomous teams, these Soldiers integrated seamlessly with both Special Operations Forces and conventional combat brigades to induce enemy surrenders, mitigate civilian casualties, and destabilize insurgent networks. Beyond direct combat, the 7th POG has executed numerous humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, utilizing their specialized broadcast and communication capabilities to coordinate life-saving instructions and stabilize populations during international crises.

Today, the 7th Psychological Operations Group operates under the U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (USACAPOC), which is headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The group commands multiple psychological operations battalions geographically dispersed across the western United States. Because its members are reservists, the 7th POG brings a distinct and highly lethal advantage to the modern information environment: its Soldiers simultaneously hold diverse civilian careers in technology, marketing, behavioral science, and mass communications. This robust civilian-military synergy allows the 7th Psychological Operations Group to continually master the evolving art of influence, ensuring the United States maintains absolute supremacy in the psychological domain.
