The 3rd Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne) specialized in the production and dissemination capabilities that brought PSYOP products to foreign audiences. Its history includes print, audio, and broadcast work, supported by technicians and sustainment personnel as well as PSYOP specialists.

      The Provisional Dissemination Battalion

The Psychological Operations Dissemination Battalion (Provisional) was organized at Fort Bragg on July 11, 1990. During Operation Desert Shield, its personnel helped establish the printing and broadcasting capability needed by the expanding U.S. force in Saudi Arabia.

The USASOC History Office describes that deployment as a period of rapid adaptation. Personnel had to combine production equipment, broadcast systems, transport, maintenance, and supply while the wider operation was taking shape.

      Formal Activation in 1995

The Regular Army 3rd Psychological Operations Battalion was constituted on April 20, 1995, and activated on November 16, 1995, using personnel from the provisional battalion. The 1990 precursor and the formal 1995 activation are therefore related but different milestones.

USASOC's published organizational description identifies the battalion's expeditionary print, audiovisual, and broadcast teams. These provided dissemination capabilities to PSYOP and other special operations forces; they were not interchangeable with the regional or tactical battalions producing and employing particular messages.

      A Later Organizational Chapter

In May 2026, the Army Sustainment Professional Bulletin published Surviving a Unit Deactivation, an interview with 3rd POB sustainment personnel about their unit's deactivation process. This supports describing a documented organizational wind-down, but does not by itself establish the effective date of an inactivation order.

AAC preserves the battalion's dissemination heritage without assigning an unsupported administrative endpoint or extending its experience to other PSYOP units.
