The 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) was first activated on 24 June 1957 at Fort Buckner, Okinawa, as one of the earliest permanent Special Forces groups established during the Cold War. Its creation reflected the Army’s recognition of the need for highly trained unconventional warfare units able to operate in Asia, particularly in the context of post-WWII regional instability and the growing threat of communism.
Vietnam War
The 1st SFG(A) deployed detachments extensively during the Vietnam War, conducting unconventional warfare, advising South Vietnamese forces, and engaging in direct action missions against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army. Its Soldiers were instrumental in developing the CIDG (Civilian Irregular Defense Group) program and training indigenous forces. Members of the 1st SFG earned numerous awards for valor, including several Medals of Honor for individual heroism.
Cold War & Pacific Focus
After Vietnam, the 1st SFG was briefly inactivated in 1974 but reactivated in 1984 at Fort Lewis, Washington (today Joint Base Lewis-McChord). Since then, the group has focused on Indo-Pacific regional operations, building partnerships with allies in Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, and throughout the Pacific Rim. Its Soldiers have conducted counterinsurgency training, foreign internal defense, and humanitarian assistance missions in the region.
Global War on Terror
Following 9/11, the 1st SFG deployed to both Afghanistan and Iraq, contributing to counterterrorism operations, special reconnaissance, and training of host-nation forces. At the same time, the group continued its Indo-Pacific focus, conducting joint exercises with regional militaries and expanding America’s special operations reach across the theater.
Structure & Mission
The 1st SFG(A) includes multiple battalions organized into Operational Detachment-Alphas (ODAs), small 12-man teams that specialize in unconventional warfare, direct action, and foreign internal defense.
