The 2nd Ranger Battalion, part of the elite 75th Ranger Regiment, is one of the U.S. Army’s most decorated light infantry units. From scaling the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc on D-Day to combat operations in Grenada, Panama, Iraq, and Afghanistan, the battalion embodies the Ranger motto, “Rangers Lead the Way.” Airborne Apparel Company is proud to offer reproductions and unique designs that celebrate the legacy of the 2nd Ranger Battalion.
The 2nd Ranger Battalion was activated on 1 April 1943 at Camp Forrest, Tennessee, and quickly earned a legendary reputation in World War II. Its defining moment came on 6 June 1944 (D-Day), when the battalion scaled the 100-foot cliffs of Pointe du Hoc under heavy German fire to destroy enemy artillery positions threatening Omaha and Utah Beaches. Later, the battalion fought through Normandy, Brest, the Hürtgen Forest, and the Battle of the Bulge, enduring some of the fiercest fighting of the war.
Postwar Inactivation & Modern Reactivation
After World War II, the 2nd Ranger Battalion was inactivated but its lineage remained preserved. It was reactivated in 1974 at Fort Lewis, Washington, as part of the newly formed 75th Ranger Regiment, establishing the modern Ranger force that exists today.
Modern Combat History
Since reactivation, the 2nd Ranger Battalion has deployed in nearly every major U.S. combat operation:
-
Operation Urgent Fury (Grenada, 1983): Conducted the airborne assault on Point Salines Airfield, rescuing American students and defeating Cuban and Grenadian forces.
-
Operation Just Cause (Panama, 1989): Parachuted into Rio Hato Airfield, seizing the site and neutralizing Panamanian Defense Forces to help restore democracy.
-
Somalia (1993): Rangers from 2nd Battalion fought in Operation Gothic Serpent, the Battle of Mogadishu—later immortalized in “Black Hawk Down”—where they fought side by side with Delta Force in intense urban combat.
-
Global War on Terror: From 2001 onward, the battalion deployed repeatedly to Afghanistan and Iraq, conducting direct-action raids, airfield seizures, counterterrorism missions, and high-value target operations. It became one of the Army’s most frequently deployed units, spearheading special operations missions worldwide.
