The 11th Air Assault Division (Test) was activated in February 1963 at Fort Benning, Georgia, to develop and validate the revolutionary concept of helicopter-borne airmobile warfare. Conceived from the recommendations of the tactical Howze Board, the division spent two years pioneering new doctrine and logistical support frameworks for deploying infantry, artillery, and medical assets rapidly via helicopter. The unit's rigorous testing culminated in the massive "AIR ASSAULT II" field exercise in late 1964, which definitively proved the tactical advantages and viability of air mobility. Having successfully completed its proving mission, the 11th Air Assault Division was deactivated on July 1, 1965, and its highly trained personnel and equipment were merged with elements of the 2nd Infantry Division to form the legendary 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), which subsequently deployed to the Vietnam War to put these groundbreaking tactics into combat practice.
