The 25th Infantry Division, known as the “Tropic Lightning” Division, is one of the U.S. Army’s most storied combat formations. Headquartered at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, it has fought in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and remains an active, rapidly deployable division in the Indo-Pacific region. Airborne Apparel Company is proud to offer reproductions and unique designs that celebrate the legacy of the 25th Infantry Division.

The 25th Infantry Division was activated on 1 October 1941 at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, the division was already on high alert, defending Oahu against potential invasion. Soon after, the 25th deployed to the Pacific Theater, where it earned its nickname, “Tropic Lightning,” for its rapid, aggressive combat in the jungles of Guadalcanal, New Georgia, and Luzon in the Philippines.

      Korean War

In July 1950, the 25th deployed to Korea, becoming one of the first Army divisions committed to the conflict. Fighting at the Pusan Perimeter, Inchon breakout, and northward drives toward the Yalu River, the division played a pivotal role in halting enemy advances. Later, it fought in defensive campaigns and held key terrain until the armistice in 1953. Two division Soldiers—PFC Herbert K. Pililaʻau and SFC Anthony T. Kahoʻohanohano, both from Hawaii—were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, symbolizing the division’s sacrifice and valor.

      Vietnam War

The 25th Infantry Division deployed to Vietnam in 1966 and remained in combat for five years, primarily in III Corps Tactical Zone near Saigon. Its Soldiers fought in the Tet Offensive of 1968 and numerous search-and-destroy and pacification campaigns. The division’s units, often operating out of Củ Chi and Tay Ninh, engaged in fierce jungle combat against both the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army. Eleven Soldiers of the division were awarded the Medal of Honor during Vietnam.

      Post-Vietnam & Modernization

After Vietnam, the division returned to Hawaii and reorganized. It participated in peacekeeping missions in the Sinai Peninsula, operations in Somalia, and later Bosnia and Kosovo. In the early 2000s, the 25th became one of the first divisions restructured into modular brigade combat teams (BCTs).

      Global War on Terror

During the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 25th Infantry Division deployed multiple BCTs:

      • In Iraq, Tropic Lightning brigades conducted combat operations in Mosul, Baghdad, and northern Iraq, as well as counterinsurgency and nation-building missions.

      • In Afghanistan, the division fought in Regional Command–East and Regional Command–South, conducting full-spectrum operations against insurgents while partnering with Afghan forces.

      Current Role & Indo-Pacific Focus

Today, the 25th Infantry Division remains active at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, with forward elements stationed in Alaska. Its primary mission is to serve as U.S. Army Pacific’s rapid response division, ready to deploy across the Indo-Pacific. The division trains extensively with allied forces in Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Australia, ensuring American power projection in the region.

      Identity & Legacy

      • Nickname: “Tropic Lightning”

      • Motto: “Ready to Strike, Anytime, Anywhere”

      • Distinctive Unit Insignia: A taro leaf (symbolizing Hawaii) with a lightning bolt (speed and power).

      Enduring Significance

From the jungles of the Pacific in World War II to the battlefields of Korea and Vietnam, and more recently in the deserts of Iraq and mountains of Afghanistan, the 25th Infantry Division has been a cornerstone of America’s combat power. Its Soldiers continue to embody the lightning strike spirit of their motto and insignia.
