How to find your best fit

Measure a well-fitting shirt you already own and compare it with the measurements below.

  • Chest width: Lay the shirt flat and measure one inch below the armhole, from side seam to side seam.
  • Back length: Measure from the center back neckline to the bottom hem.
  • Shoulder width: Measure straight across the back from shoulder seam to shoulder seam.
  • Sleeve length: Measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the sleeve unless the chart notes otherwise.

Measurements are in inches. Allow for a manufacturing tolerance of approximately 0.5 to 1 inch.

In 1890, the U.S. Army adopted the crossed arrows as the distinctive insignia of the U.S. Indian Scouts, whose missions emphasized scouting, tracking, reconnaissance, and operating in small, independent elements. The design, associated with 1st Lt. Edward Casey’s scout units, remained in use until 1926.

During World War II, the crossed arrows were revived as the collar insignia of the First Special Service Force, the elite American-Canadian unit whose unconventional missions helped establish an important lineage for later U.S. special operations forces. The symbolism—fieldcraft, adaptability, independence, and irregular warfare—made the arrows a natural fit for the emerging Army Special Forces community.

The Army formally brought the crossed arrows back for Special Forces personnel in 1984, and when Special Forces became a separate Army branch in 1987, the crossed arrows were officially adopted as its branch insignia. Today’s Special Forces crossed arrows connect the Green Berets directly to a U.S. Army insignia tradition dating back to the Indian Scouts of 1890. This design honors that heritage.
