      The 2nd Infantry Division links American service in World War I and World War II with the Korean War and the continuing U.S.–Republic of Korea alliance. Its history includes both the “Indianhead” identity and the division's “Second to None” expression.

      Organized in France

      The division was organized on October 26, 1917, at Bourmont, France. Its World War I organization brought Army and Marine infantry together within one division. Service at Belleau Wood and in the later fighting of 1918 established an important part of its combat heritage.

      World War II

      The division landed at Omaha Beach on June 7, 1944, the day after D-Day. It fought through Normandy, including the struggle for Hill 192, and subsequently served in the campaign across Western Europe.

      During the Battle of the Bulge, its Soldiers helped resist the German offensive before continuing the advance into Germany. Its Normandy arrival was an amphibious movement, not a parachute or glider assault.

      Korea

      The 2nd Infantry Division entered the Korean War in 1950. Its combat record includes the fighting at Chipyong-ni, where the 23rd Infantry Regimental Combat Team and attached French Battalion held against attacking Chinese forces.

      The division returned to Korea in 1965, beginning a long period of service supporting the defense of the Republic of Korea.

      A Combined Division

      In 2015, the Army established the 2nd Infantry Division/ROK–U.S. Combined Division. This chapter centers on allied readiness and combined operations, with personnel and organizations at installations including Camp Humphreys and Camp Casey.

      The division's current Korea mission and the histories of individual regiments associated with it should be read separately. AAC's collection honors the different generations of Soldiers represented by that shared division identity.
