The Virgin Mary and Paratroopers stained glass window in the Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption in Sainte-Mère-Église is one of Normandy’s most recognizable tributes to the American airborne troops who landed there on D-Day. Designed by Paul Renaud, the young son of Sainte-Mère-Église’s mayor, and made by Gabriel Loire of Chartres, the window depicts the Virgin Mary and Child surrounded by descending American paratroopers. Its imagery blends sacred tradition with the memory of June 6, 1944, turning the church into a living memorial to the men who came from the sky to liberate the town.
