Unit History & Information
The 187th Infantry Regiment was activated on February 25, 1943, as a glider infantry regiment of the 11th Airborne Division. Its World War II service took it to the Pacific, including the fighting on Leyte and Luzon. During the occupation of Japan, local observers of its parachute training gave the regiment the nickname Rakkasan, commonly translated as “falling umbrella men.” Reorganized as the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team in 1950, it went on to conduct combat parachute assaults at Sukchon-Sunchon and Munsan-ni during the Korean War.
The 1st Battalion’s later history includes service in Panama and its reactivation at Fort Campbell in 1987, when the 4th Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment was redesignated as the 1st Battalion. In February 1991, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment conducted an air assault onto Objective Weber during the Gulf War and captured more than 400 Iraqi soldiers. Its history forms part of the Rakkasan tradition carried by the 101st Airborne Division.
