507th Parachute Infantry Regiment insignia with the “Down to Earth” motto, printed on the left chest.
The 507th PIR was activated at Fort Benning, Georgia, on July 20, 1942. Attached to the 82nd for the Normandy invasion, the regiment made its first combat jump on June 6, 1944. Scattered across the countryside near the Merderet River, its Paratroopers fought in small groups before linking up with larger formations.
The regiment joined the 17th in August 1944 and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. On March 24, 1945, the 507th jumped east of the Rhine during Operation Varsity, then continued into Germany with the division. Those two combat jumps, into Normandy and across the Rhine, are central to the regiment's Down to Earth heritage.
