508th Parachute Infantry Regiment insignia with the “Fury from the Sky” motto, printed on the left chest.
The 508th PIR was activated at Camp Blanding, Florida, on October 20, 1942. The regiment trained together before deploying to Europe and joining the 82nd for the Normandy invasion. On June 6, 1944, its Paratroopers landed west of the Merderet River, where scattered groups fought to secure the division's objectives.
The 508th made its second combat jump on September 17, 1944, north of Groesbeek, Holland. Despite antiaircraft fire on the approach, the regiment reported 90 percent of its men assembled and moving toward their objectives by 3 p.m. Its Fury from the Sky motto reflects that regimental Airborne identity.
