509th Parachute Infantry Regiment insignia with the “All the Way” motto, printed on the left chest.
The 509th's combat record began near Oran, Algeria, on November 8, 1942, with the U.S. Army's first combat parachute assault. Then designated 2/509, the unit flew from England to North Africa in C-47s. A week later, the Paratroopers repacked their own chutes and jumped again at Youks les Bains near the Tunisian border.
The 509th went on to fight in Italy, landed with Darby's Rangers at Anzio, and jumped into southern France on August 15, 1944. The insignia's five arrowheads recall its five World War II assault landings, including the amphibious landing at Anzio. The stylized parachutist and All the Way motto carry that heritage forward.
