511th Parachute Infantry Regiment insignia with the “Strength from Above” motto, printed on the left chest.
The 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment was formed at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, in January 1943 and became part of the 11th Airborne Division. Its Paratroopers fought on Leyte and Luzon during the liberation of the Philippines. On February 3, 1945, the regiment made a combat jump onto Tagaytay Ridge as the division advanced toward Manila.
On February 23, 1945, troops of the 511th took part in the raid at Los Baños, working with Filipino guerrillas and other elements of the 11th Airborne Division to rescue 2,147 civilian internees. The operation combined a parachute assault with an amphibious evacuation. After the war, the regiment served on occupation duty in Japan. Its motto, “Strength from Above,” appears on the insignia.
