551st Parachute Infantry Battalion insignia, printed on the left chest.
The 551st Parachute Infantry Battalion was activated at Fort Benning, Georgia, in 1942 as an independent Airborne battalion. Known as the GOYAs, its Paratroopers trained at Fort Kobbe, Panama, before returning to the United States and later deploying to Europe. On August 15, 1944, the battalion jumped into southern France during Operation Dragoon.
During the Battle of the Bulge, the 551st fought through severe winter conditions and suffered devastating casualties. Its final major attack captured Rochelinval, Belgium, on January 7, 1945, at the cost of many more men, including battalion commander LTC Wood Joerg. The depleted battalion was disbanded, and its surviving Paratroopers were reassigned within the 82nd.
