Unit History & Information
The U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence at Fort Sam Houston traces its origins to the Medical Field Service School, established at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, in 1920 to prepare doctors, dentists and nurses for their duties as Army officers. The school moved to Fort Sam Houston in 1946, became the Academy of Health Sciences in 1972 and the Army Medical Department Center and School in 1991. It received the Medical Center of Excellence designation in September 2019.
The Medical Center of Excellence Basic Officer Leader Course prepares Army Medical Department officers for their responsibilities as Army leaders. Training combines basic Soldier skills, tactical medical doctrine, discipline, teamwork and leadership development at Fort Sam Houston, part of Joint Base San Antonio. Class 26-266 continues that tradition of preparing medical officers to support Soldiers and Army missions.
